Wichita Falls Faith Mission, Inc.

Length of Service:

80+ hours per month for 2 years

During the course of an ordinary day, SMSgt. Roger Hererra Sr., Ret. saw someone sleeping on the ground. It startled him to learn that the homelessness he observed in third world countries while serving in the military was in his own community.

When Roger's wife of 58 years, Betty, passed away in June 2012, he quickly realized he did not want to sit home alone all day. Just one month later, he started volunteering to serve noon meals at Wichita Falls Faith Mission. The staff and people that he serves at the Mission soon became his family. Roger will be the first to say that he feels rewarded by serving others. Everyone needs a sense of belonging. When he voluntarily stepped into the world of serving the homeless, he gained a sense of belonging and the people served at the Mission feel welcome when they enter the dining room.

Roger reflected a sense of ownership in the mission when the roof was leaking in the dining room where he volunteers. Not only did he help raise funds for the new 23,600 sq. ft. roof at Faith Mission, he actively recruited new volunteers and now supervises them in the dining room for two meals a day, seven days a week. He serves an average of 100 people daily.

Roger encourages men in the recovery program at the Mission to share their story with volunteers. He encourages them in their daily lives. He helps to fulfill the vision to eliminate homelessness with his encouragement and attitude to live life to the fullest.
