Active Generations is a community center geared toward active older adults in Sioux Falls, SD. This membership organization is unique in the fact that the majority of all our programs are led by volunteers. This includes all recreation/leisure clubs, our coffee shop, gift shop, classes, special events and much more. With a limited staff, these volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization and help the programs and activities run smoothly every day.

With being such a multi-faceted facility, rooms are used for many different purposes throughout the day which means tables and chairs must be moved, equipment must be placed for appropriate programs and tear down and set up of rooms and programs is an ongoing and daily occurrence.

Glenn Walker and his wife Cathy joined Active Generations in 2007. He wasted no time getting involved. Shortly after he joined he saw the need for more help with room set up and tear down and started helping. He flew beneath the radar, never expecting a thank you or praise, but just helped whenever he saw a need. It was not until about two years later that Glenn "officially" signed up as a volunteer. Because of this, hundreds of Glenn's volunteer hours were not recorded. Since he has started officially recording hours, he has given more than 2,100 hours to Active Generations.

Each week, Glenn assists with program set up and tear down as well as helping set up the Center's dining room for the lunch meal each day. Three years ago he helped start our Wii Bowling League and is one of the leaders of this Active Generations program. Each week he sets up up four machines (4 bowling lanes) and helps run this league which goes 8 months of the year. He has also helped run the Bocce Ball club in years past.

Glenn is also now known as the "go-to" guy for picking up or delivering items around town for the organization. Each month he takes our monthly newspapers to six local drug stores as well as the VA hospital to put out in racks to help market our facility and programs. He also will pick up items or supplies needed for special events and fundraisers.

Glenn is also an instrumental part of the Goldn' Silver Drama Club. He is their number one stage hand. From helping to make stage backdrops, putting up the portable storage and curtains to helping take props on and off the stage during a production, this Drama Club relies heavily on Glenn and his help. He is the man "behind the scenes" that makes the shows a great success. Though the actors and musicians get most of the praise and recognition, Glenn is an instrumental piece of the puzzle but does none of his work for recognition or praise.

Glenn, an avid car collector, has also been very instrumental in helping Active Generations organize and run its Annual All American Car Show each summer. He helps with marketing of the event, getting flyers out to his own classic car club and also helps organize the cars in the parking lot the day of the event. Whether raining or 100 hot degrees, Glenn is helping to park cars, and assist collectors as they arrive at the event. He is always the first one to help set up and is always the last one to leave making sure tables, chairs and supplies are put away in their proper place.

Glenn is an everyday hero and should be considered for this Salute to Senior Service Award. He is making a difference each and every day to our organization and our members.
