Doris was an Emergency Room nurse for 30 years. When she retired from that, she became very active in the hospitals volunteer arm, the Anne Arundel Medical Center Auxiliary. After working in a number of areas, she focused on working at the Clothes Box, the resale shop at the hospital. She is the volunteer coordinator for this operation, managing over 100 volunteers while working at least 20 hours a week at the shop herself. The Clothes Box is the single largest annual contributor to the hospital, giving $250000 to the hospital last year. This service impacts the ability of the hospital to serve the community, especially those in need of assistance. She works tirelessly to make sure the Clothes Box works as a business despite being staffed by a regularly changing volunteer group. And she does it with grace and humor.
Additionally, she is a woman of deep commitment to her church where she runs all of the hospitality. This includes coordinating all the needs of any parish party, gathering, celebration. But, most importantly, this includes being responsible for the hospitality for the 40 homeless men who are welcomed to the church each winter for a week. That includes 3 meals a day for each man and the volunteers as well as creating an environment in which they feel welcome. She goes above and beyond.
