Helping Hands of Vegas Valley

Length of Service:

15 hours per month for 4 years

February 6, 2014

Bill came to Helping Hands of Vegas Valley after retiring from teaching. He volunteers to transport home-bound seniors living in the Vegas Valley to their medical and other critical appointments using his own car. Bill takes his commitment to Helping Hands - and our senior clients - very seriously. He understands the critical nature of the service he is providing. Without transportation, many of our clients simply would not be able to receive the health care that they need in order to maintain their health and live independently. Bill is one of our top volunteers in terms of reliability and all around quality. Bill is very patient with our clients, which is a true virtue, and one that our clients do not see in people all that often. He has true compassion for our clients, and they know it and appreciate it. One time, Bill was scheduled to pick up a client and tried multiple attempts the day before to call and confirm their ride for the next day, but could not reach her. Typically, volunteers will just let us know that they cannot get a hold of a client and then our staff takes responsibility for following up with that client. But Bill did not give up; he drove to her house the evening before to make sure she was ok and that she did still need the ride on the following day. Bill's contribution and impact on the home-bound seniors of the Vegas Valley is enormous. Vegas is home to the 3rd fastest growing senior population in the country and the only way our organization can keep up with the demand for our transportation services ( free to our clients) is with people with the kind of dedication and compassion that Bill has. We wish we had 50 more just like Bill!
