Just over five years ago, Thurman Haynes was approached by Guilford County Schools to see if he would be interested in selling some of his land in order to build a new school for children with disabilities. Soon after, the district began to build the Meredith Leigh Haynes-Bennie Lee Inman Education Center, a school named in part for Thurman's granddaughter. Meredith was a child with a disability, who had previously attended a school for students with special needs.

Thurman soon began to watch the construction on a daily basis. He got to know many of the people who were building the school. It was important to him that they knew the significance of what they were building. They rewarded him with a hard hat and within a year, a beautiful new school was completed, just down the hill from his home.

We met Thurman soon after we moved into the building. He quickly became involved in the school. We now see Thurman on a daily basis. He is typically one of the first to arrive. He volunteers each day, beginning with assisting our students off the bus. Each day he greets each of our buses and then helps to make sure that each of our students gets to class safely. As the day begins, Thurman works his way to the gym, where he assists each day in PE. He helps our students with significant disabilities participate in activities such as volleyball, jumping rope, and shuffleboard. It is amazing to see the energy he brings.

Thurman participates in all of our school events. He routinely attends school leadership team meetings, PTA meetings, the fall festival, and even dances in the Spring Music Program. Thurman made sure that each student received a yearbook after our first school year.

Thurman Haynes averages well over 100 hours of volunteer time each month. . . . . and oh, by the way, Thurman celebrated his 97th birthday in January! He reminds us each day at Haynes-Inman what it really means to Dream Big!
