January 23, 2014
Russell Stevens has been a volunteer for the Bedford Volunteer Fire Department for 38 years, he has dedicated countless hours to the system. The fire department has never turned over a call to another agency and the majority of those calls, Russell has been in attendance. He is normally the first one to mark up on the radio and enroute to the fire house. He enjoys volunteering and giving back to our community. He dedicates each Wednesday night for four hours a night and each Sunday for eight hours to helping new members become certified as firefighters so they can also give back to the community. Russell treats his service as a priority and often puts himself second to the service he gives to the community and others. He has been a huge part of the fire and emergency service in Bedford County. He has met milestones in the community that no other volunteer has, he has also served in multiple capacities from basic firefighter all the way up to the position of volunteer Chief. He currently serves as a line officer but continues to be a mentor to many others within his department and within the Bedford County system. He has been an advocate for meeting the organization mission and without him many projects would not have seen completion. It is an honor to nominate Russell Stevens for this award.
