My father worked for about 40 years as a civil servant for the Department of Defense. Needless to say, he worked very hard at a job he got no particular pleasure or happiness out of. However, his job allowed my parents to live comfortably in Northern Virginia; my brother and I got a wonderful private school education, yearly vacations, and four years of college for each of us. It is important because my father retired on a Friday. On Monday, he immediately began volunteering for many organizations.

When asked why he volunteers so much and doesn't do more things "fun", he expressed that since he was so blessed by God with family, health, a good life - it is imperative that it is our duty to help those that need it most. He gets hugs from little old ladies that he delivers meals to and he got the ugliest Christmas decoration from another home bound woman - both of these things my father loves. He hung the decoration much to my mom's dismay! Even though he volunteered a little before he retired, I like to believe that it is because of him I volunteer so much. My father truly walks the walk and is devoted to those people he interacts with. We had to delay vacation because my dad wanted to make sure one home bound man could get back from a doctor's appointment. He is truly the man that has given his life to everyone else, but himself.
