Karleen W.

Osceola, NE
Nominated by Susan Chrastil

Volunteered for:

Annie Jeffrey Thrift Shop

Length of Service:

35 hours per month for 18 years

February 23, 2013

Karleen has led her team of Annie Jeffrey Volunteers since they formed in 1994. On September 22, 1994, a group of women met at Annie Jeffrey Health Center, led by Karleen Watts, to organize what is now known as the Annie Jeffrey Volunteers. They came up with the idea of raising money for the hospital by opening a Thrift Shop, so on November 15, 1995, the Thrift Shop opened at its present location, 451 Hawkeye in Osceola, NE. Presently, there are approximately 60 volunteers, with most of them working at least once or twice a month at the Thrift Shop. Since its inception, the AJ Volunteers have donated over $93,000.00 to Annie Jeffrey Health Center with proceeds from the Thrift Shop.

Before the AJ Volunteers organized and opened up the Thrift Shop, Polk County did not have anywhere to take or purchase gently used clothing, household appliances and furnishings. The Thrift Shop is also where needy families can go to get clothing for their families at little or no cost.

Besides leading the AJ volunteers and operating the Thrift Shop in Osceola and donating the proceeds to the hospital, Karleen is dedicated to helping with other community and hospital activities, such as helping at the Health Fairs and assisting local nursing homes with community projects and helping with a new community action group in Osceola.

Karleen is chairman of The AJ Volunteers Board of Directors and holds monthly meetings to tell the other volunteers about hospital volunteer opportunities, update the Thrift Shop schedule, authorize purchases for the hospital, and donate excess merchandise to other organizations.

Karleen actively recruit new members from local churches, senior centers and newly retired individuals. Karleen encourages those who have never volunteered to join the AJ Volunteers and enjoy the gratification that comes from community service and volunteering.

She has the dedication and spirit to have such a great team of Volunteers run the Thrift Shop and volunteer for other hospital
activities.

What a GREAT VOLUNTEER!! Good Job Karleen!!
