Homer A (Hank) W.
Nominated by Emily Lundgren
Length of Service:
45 hours per month for 6 years
February 20, 2014
In January of 2007, Hank saw an article in the newspaper that described how a horse from SC CARES needed an operation. He helped the horse and then helped to build the barn that housed the horse. This began his journey of volunteering at SC CARES.
Hank would share that volunteering may not always be a joy (considering the neglect of the animals we receive and the death of those he has come to love), but he believes in keeping active in his senior years and the contentment he feels in helping the discarded and abused creatures that live here.
The animals who now call SC CARES home are the ones who benefit as well as the humans Hank comes in contact with. He is at the sanctuary almost daily. Amazing for a 91 year old man! His dedication to our building projects (nearly every enclosure on our property was either built by Hank or with his help), his mechanical skills (repairing the lawn mower, refrigerators or generators), the daily chores of feeding our animals (collects and stores the bales of hay that are donated), handling the compost, and loving them is what makes Hank an intricate part of our sanctuary. He does all of this and contributes financially which has kept us going through some difficult times and helps during our fundraising events. The other volunteers who witness his dedication are inspired by what this 91 year old man continues to do.
Hank is a WWII veteran who believes that his job is to provide comfort and see to the health and wellbeing of all the creatures (animal and human) at SC CARES. He does this with a generous heart.
