Dan Bean

2014 Winner

Shelburne, VT
Nominated by Martha Richardson

Volunteered for:

Alzheimer's Association, VT Chapter

Length of Service:

25 hours per month for 11 years

February 19, 2014

Dr. Bean's wife passed away with young-onset Alzheimer's disease in 2002. Since her passing, Dan has dedicated his volunteer efforts to realizing our vision of a world without Alzheimer's. He has served in a leadership role with the Chapter since joining the Board of Directors in 2003.

Dan helps in all capacities. His primary efforts have focused on advocacy issues. He has been the chapter's principal participant in our annual Advocacy Forum in Washington DC for 7+ years and has worked with Senators Leahy and Sanders as well as Congressman Welch to enlist their support of legislative issues effecting the 33,000+ people in Vermont impacted by Alzheimer's disease or a related form of dementia.

During my tenure as Executive Director for the Alzheimer's Association, Vermont Chapter Dan has been the person to call on for any and all projects! He always responds with a smile and positive attitude. His willingness to jump on board embodies the spirit of volunteerism. We can count on him to always go above and beyond.

In the few years I have known Dan he has served on the chapter Board of Directors, recruitment committee for our Walk to End Alzheimer's, as a Champions level Walk Team Captain, coordinates our silent auction for the annual 50+ Expo in Burlington, has written several letters to the editor in support of families living with Alzheimer's disease and is a constant ambassador for the Alzheimer's Association throughout the community, building bridges between our chapter and those in need.

I know that Dan and his second wife, Jeanette Voss, are involved in additional volunteer efforts throughout the community, but when I asked him for details his modesty prevailed, responding much of my activity is sort of a tag-along with Jeanette at the parish, CareNet, Respite House, etc.

Dan is a compassionate and caring gentleman and I commend him for all that he does to build a better community

Enthusiastically submitted,

Martha Richardson
Executive Director
Alzheimer's Association, Vermont Chapter
