Delores has organized the sack lunch program at Royal Oak First UMC.
It began withbag lunches being distributed to the homeless M-F, Sept.-June.
It has grown to hot lunch/fruit/snack/water/ along with a bag lunch to take, M-F all year long. Clothing is distributed once a month. They offer Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas sit down dinners to all who sign up. It keeps growing and growing and Delores works harder and harder to get volunteers to help her. She does all the shopping, and much of the sandwich making and cooking herself. She organizes the volunteers by making phone calls and schedules. It is a never ending job.
We live in a community where there are many in need and our sack lunch program is essential to many in the area.

Delores' service is tireless and selfless. She does not look for accolades or awards. Her leadership is a true blessing to the community.

I nominate Delores for this because of her dedication of her own time for almost fifteen years. She dedicates her life to this program and never asks for anything in return and she deserves a reward for her time.

I would like to thank Delores for the opportunity she gives my son during the summer to help with the program. He has the most fun and always feels great after helping to feed them. i really hope she wins as it will help this program a lot.

Not only is it the time and dedication she puts in at the church, but the time shopping for the best prices, picking up donations and working with her volunteers on schedules. It is also the care she takes to make sure her guests are treated with respect in these tough times.

Delores Grier is willing to shop at many places to get the most for her money to feed the people who come to the door in need. She is also willing to go to organizations to let them know of the great need. God bless her!

Dolores provides a much needed service to Royal Oak. The lunch program shows us how a true follower of Jesus acts by serving others.

Dolores does a terrific job with the sack lunch program. It is quite a job to organize the volunteers. I am a volunteer in the program. If for some reason I can't make my scheduled day, all I have to do is call Delores. Many times she fills in when a volunteer can't make it. She and her husband Mike do all the shopping for the program. The program used to stop for the summer months. Delores has extended the program so that the homeless are served all year long. On special days like Thanksgiving she serves a complete hot meal.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to serve for the sack lunch program under Dolores Grier for one season. It was a great experience. She does work tirelessly for this program, but what struck me the most was her lack of judgement and her compassion for these people in need in our community. It's amazing to me that she has stuck with it for so many years!
  11. February 21, 2012 at 05:23 pm | Posted by Nancy Lorenz

Delores with the help of her husband Mike does a terrific job with the sack lunch program. She makes sure that during the cooler months that something hot is served to the people that come in to get a lunch.

Delores Grier has been involved with the Sack Lunch Program for 15 years . This program provides a noon meal for the homeless of our community. She often plans to provide special meals and not the same "sack lunch" day after day after day. Our church is in the middle of the city and easily accessible for those in need and must be most special to the hungry and homeless. Her dedicated service is so valuable.

Delores comes to the church any time any day to deliver food for the program, make sandwiches, sort contributions of food, clothing or toiletries and manages the other volunteers. It doesn't stop there. She also helps out with several other church programs, and always with a smile and a good word.

Delores runs the Sack Lunch program like a well-oiled machine. I am a volunteer in the program; and each day I work the items are well stocked and organized. We feed between 20 -40 homeless or food insecure individuals every day If we did not have this program; they would go hungry. Delores is amazing at what she does; always positive. She greatly deserves this honor.

Delores is always there to help the community where ever there is a need. She diligently for years has provided the homeless in or area with a hot meal, a sack lunch and a comforting word. She has organized a once a month "store" for our friends who might need clothing, toiletries or a smile. It is a pleasure to work along side a person so dedicated to helping others, and who is so greatly appreciated by all those who come in contact with her. Delores is a very humble person, but deserves this award for all that we have learned from her.

For the past six years I've had the pleasure of working with Delores in the sack lunch program. She gives generously of her time to this ministry at our church. The program meets the needs of many in the community; five days a week, all year long, including arranging sit-down dinners on special holidays. Delores is always "on call" stepping in when a volunteer can't come, preparing meals, organizing the clothes closet, shopping for the best prices and I've never heard her complain nor have I heard one negative word from her about all she does to keep the program running smoothly. She is truly amazing and has so much love and respect for each person who comes for lunch each day. Delores is so deserving of this award and a real hero to so many who daily depend on the sack lunch program.

Delores is a person, that demonstrates daily what Jesus taught us, love your neighbor as yourself. Delores has been a committed volunteer serving others for many years in many capacities all over Royal Oak, Michigan. The sack lunch program is not only a place for the hungry to be fed, sometimes its a new pair of socks or a warm jacket, but always served with respect and love. Delores is a blessing to her family, her church and to her friends and to the many she serves who don't even know her name.

Delores works tirelessly in her efforts to ensure so many do not go hungry or cold. The people she serves at the lunch program know her well, and cannot say enough nice things about her. Our family and community is blessed to have such a selfless person in our midst. Thank you for never judging, always being there, and teaching future generations the true definition of Christian faith. My mother...my inspiration!

Many people depend on this wonderful program and the vital service it provides. Sack lunch sounds so simple, but it takes a lot of dedication and energy to keep it going, and it has become much more than just lunch. Delores' ministry is kindness.

Through her vision, kindness, enthusiasm, leadership and many thousands of hours dedicated over the past 15 years, Delores' sack lunch program has become one of the most successful ministries of our church and one of the ministries our church members are most proud to be associated with. The program provides some of the most direct and regular contact and help to those in need offered anywhere in our community. Delores leverages herself by gently encouraging others to donate food, clothes and money and to become involved. In turn, they are also well rewarded in the satisfaction of helping countless others.

Delores has been in charge of the sack lunch program at our church for the past fifteen years and the program has grown every year since then. Six hundred to seven hundred needy and homeless people are served lunch monthly. The program is open five days a week all year including special meals served on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. Delores has volunteers helping to serve the lunches and she organizes their schedules to keep the program operating efficiently. Donations of money, food and clothing makes and keeps this ministry successful with her supervision. She is such a caring person and serves so many in our community.

Delores has been steadfast for many years in assuring that those in need in our community receive a nutritious lunch daily. The church where these meals are provided is in an urban area where these lunches are very important to the people receiving them. In addition, she has arranged for those in need to receive clothing and other personal items.

Delores has done so much for so many people - always with a smile and always with her guests best interests in her heart. She and her husband, Mike, are angels to the people who come for the sack lunch, the conversation, the lending library and the clothing they generously give away. The Sack Lunch Program which has fed many people for many years would not exist if it were not for Delores, Mike and her wonderful helpers. She is certainly worthly of this award.

Delores deserves to win. She does so much for the sack lunch program at Royal Oak First United Methodist. Along with the shopping for supplies, she also prepares a hot meal at times using food that has been donated.
  54. March 9, 2012 at 12:48 pm | Posted by Peggy Gill

We serve lunches year round now 10:30-11:30. We have a good bunch of volunteers who give out lunches to our guests that number 30-35 a day - less in the winter when the Welcome Inn is open all day. They get a lunch that is state approved, plus something hot. Different people donate soup, pasta and other specialties, and our church cook also makes things - grilled cheese is a favorite. One of our homeless has been in the hospital and rehab since he was hit by a car and says our food is better that the hospital's. Delores and her husband Mike have a big family, and every holiday still serve a big dinner - a sit down dinner in our parlor. The 4th Monday of the month, we have a clothes closet. The clothes are laid out according to size and they can take what the want. All of this is handled by Delores. last year, her father died at 102 - she had cared for him at her home for many years before that.

We are filled with great admiration as we write about the one and only Delores Grier, our volunteer coordinator. She does everything such as planning and buying the food, does holiday meals, birthdays one a month, clothing day all for the sack lunch folks. There isn't anything she wouldn't tackle and always ends up with great results. She is a great example of a loving and caring person and is very well respected! She is our hero!

I have known Delores Grier for many years. We worked together at Longfellow School in Royal Oak, on a kindergarten computer program. She gave endless hours of volunteer work at the elementary school. She was always busy, taking care of her father who lived with her. She was always giving especially to the sack lunch program. She has a kind way of communicating with the homeless. She spends many hours organizing, preparing, and purchasing food supplies for the homeless program. What a blessing she is to the community, our church, and to her family. Sally Yago

Her hard work, commitment and dedication to this program for 15 years truly amazes me. It also shows just how much she cares about others. The impact this program has on the community is huge and I feel Delores is well deserving of this award and I know she would be thrilled to earn the $5,000 donation for the program.

Delores is an inspiration to me and my family. My understanding is that this past weekend alone, Delores and her "crew" provided around 500 meals to those in need of assistance. While time and distance do not allow me to provide the hands-on support that others give to Delores, I am inspired to give in other ways and to other organizations. Not only does Delores offer the physical nourishment to those she feeds, but provides the spiritual nourishment so needed by those fortunate enough to call her friend. It’s unfortunate that those to whom Delores provides the most critical support are least able to express their gratitude on this forum; nevertheless, I know that this is not important to Delores because she receives her accolades every day she is doing what she loves, helping those in need. We love you Dee. Chris, Carol, John and Rachel

I think 15 years of volunteering deserves to be recognized. To manage a volunteer program and watch it grow is to watch God at work in your midst. If this program has grown out of donations and volunteer hours imagine what it could accomplish with $5000. I vote for Delores not only for her dedication these past 15 years but because I am excited to see what she will do in the next 15+ years.

Delores' dedication to the sack lunch program is a meer extension of the selfless person she has been for the may years I've known her. Dolores puts more time and energy into the sack lunch program than most people realize. She works hard shopping, cooking, arranging volunteer schedules and making sure everyone is happy and comfortable. She truly deserves an extra $5,000 so she can continue to help people going through hard times.

My wife and I have been friends with Delores for about 50 years. We met at our church and started out together as leaders in our Sunday evening youth program. Her current respnsibilities as the coordinator of the Sack Lunch program is typical of her commitment to helping others. I have been impressed that I have heard no negative comments about how she is managing her responsibilities. A rare occurance in this day and age. Delores is giving the most precious gift of all, the gift of her self, an example for all of us to live up to.

I don't know that I can add much to what has already been written here. My mother amazes me in her seemingly tireless effort to carry out this program. To say that she dedicates only 40 hours per month is a huge understatment. She spends much more time gathering food and supplies, shopping, recruiting donors and volunteers, and organizing schedules. She and Mike make sure that food is there on holidays as well. Then, home to have a meal with family. She also works with other area programs on days when they finish with extra food. There was a time when some members of the community felt that the program reflected poorly on the neighborhood and wanted it stopped. This community pressure didn't stop her from doing what she knows to be right! Judges, I see that Delores now has 6 more nominations!! Keep up the great work Mom!! Love, Tim

In addition to the many hours Delores Grier volunteers each week managing the Sack Lunch Program, she also gives of her time in support of many other ministries at Royal Oak First United Methodist Church. To name a few; once each month she coordinates the Sunday Fellowship Time, she manages the dining room during our annual fish dinners and is always a willing volunteer for our Funeral Meal Ministry. We are truly blessed to have such dedicated volunteers as Delores (& her husband Mike)!

Today is March 15th; the last day for Contest Enteries; I had a delightfull grilled cheese at Dolores' program today and hopefully surprizing presented her with a petition signed by the very people she serves lunch and "love' to: Some of the patrons mispelled their thanks as I mistyped some words on my last entery; but the smiles and heartwarming thnaks for joy Dolores has brought into so many seemingly hopeless lives and demeaning situations to a New Fruitation of Spirtuality for the Emotions; Soul & Mind of the physically-mentally-financially striken non-residents of the royal Oak streetscene that she has blessed with her wisdom and kind-hearted heart-of-gold...I would have liked to type-in the comments on the petition/hand-made card I inconspiciously left for her on the daily sign-in sheet clipboard...But I couldn't decipher all of the comments properly enogh to type them into the community library computer; the gratitude expressed on paper and outloud as the petition was signed by those Doris and her staff faithfully assist almost 24/7...WAS ...OVERWHELMING!!!!!!!

It is written in the Bible that we are to feed the hungry and clothes the naked, but it takes a special person with a Christ-like heart to step out on the call of God. Someone that goes over and beyond her call to make sure that His will is done. This will be a manly reward, but her reward waits for her in heaven!!

Delores is a wonderfully generous woman that puts the needs of others before her own. Through volunteering and running the Sak Program she makes sure that others are able to have a nice meal to eat. Thank you for all your hard work and generousity toward others!

Delores Grier truly practices the Golden Rule every day and gives with all her heart. As a Senior herself, she is a source of inspiration to all of us in what a follower of Christ can do for others. She treats all those who come to sack lunch with kindness and a smile and adds to their personhood and self-respect. She is a blessing to those folks, to her church and to all with whom she comes in contact. Her guidance and administration of the program has allowed thousands of needy folks to find sustenance and help and a friendly face. Delores well deserves your prize and will be using it in a wonderful ministry. Thank you Delores!
